Did you know 90% of Data Breaches are caused by human error?
In most cases, data breaches are a result of a Phishing tactic that is initiated by clicking a malicious link. It is important to evaluate and verify any suspicious email or text message that presents a link. Video conferencing platforms such as Skype & Teams chat messaging have also been used to distribute malicious links.
Tips to verify the validity of a suspicious link
1 - Misspelt domain (example, instead of a valid sender domain such as @kinu.ca, you may see @kimu.ca from the sender. This would be considered suspicious)
2 - If a suspicious email is poorly written, it most likely is a scam. Be wary of spelling and grammar when presented with a skeptical email.
3 - Urgent action demands is an attempt to leverage your feelings to appear as a time sensitive action to click the link.
4 - Phishing attack vectors can also be initiated by way of QR codes, it is important to stay diligent when deciding to scan any QR code.
Be sure to forward all suspicious emails to phishing@kinu.ca.
